High cholesterol is one of the most important — and most controllable — risk factors for heart disease. But not all cholesterol tests are the same. At Oly Heart & Vascular Institute, we use a variety of lipid tests to give a complete picture of your cardiovascular health and guide personalized treatment.
Why Lipid Testing Matters
Cholesterol and triglycerides are types of fats (lipids) found in your blood. While your body needs some cholesterol to function, too much — especially the wrong kinds — can lead to plaque buildup in your arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and peripheral artery disease.
Regular lipid testing helps:
- Identify cardiovascular risk early
- Guide diet and lifestyle recommendations
- Monitor the effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering treatment
- Detect genetic lipid disorders
Common Types of Lipid Tests
1. Standard Lipid Panel
The most widely used cholesterol test, usually done after fasting for 9–12 hours. It measures:
- Total Cholesterol – Overall amount of cholesterol in the blood
- LDL (“Bad”) Cholesterol – Promotes plaque buildup in arteries
- HDL (“Good”) Cholesterol – Helps remove cholesterol from the bloodstream
- Triglycerides – Another type of fat linked to heart disease when elevated
2. Direct LDL Measurement
Used when fasting is not possible or triglyceride levels are very high, as high triglycerides can interfere with LDL calculation in a standard panel.
3. Non-HDL Cholesterol
Calculated by subtracting HDL from total cholesterol. This number includes all “bad” particles that can promote atherosclerosis and is often a better predictor of heart disease risk than LDL alone.
4. Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)
Measures the number of atherogenic (plaque-causing) particles in the blood. ApoB testing can be particularly helpful for patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or borderline cholesterol results.
5. Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]
A genetic form of LDL cholesterol that can significantly increase heart disease risk, even when other cholesterol numbers are normal. This is usually checked once in a lifetime, especially if there is a family history of early heart disease.
6. Advanced Lipoprotein Testing (NMR or Ion Mobility)
Provides a detailed breakdown of cholesterol particle size and number. Smaller, denser LDL particles may be more harmful than larger ones, and knowing this can help fine-tune treatment.
Which Test Is Right for You?
Most patients start with a standard lipid panel as part of routine screening. If you have additional risk factors — such as family history, diabetes, high blood pressure, or early heart disease in relatives — your cardiologist may recommend more specialized tests like ApoB or Lp(a).
At Oly Heart & Vascular Institute, we tailor lipid testing to each patient’s unique risk profile. Our goal is to detect problems early, create a personalized prevention plan, and keep your heart as healthy as possible.
